What does the Questrade referral code get you?
The Questrade referral code is 896023510497901, and the Refer a Friend reward is $50 CAD to the new client and $50 CAD to the referrer. Enter it in the Offer code box while opening a new self-directed investing or Questwealth Portfolios account, then finish opening and funding that account within 60 days.
Questrade pays both sides in the month after the account is completed — not on funding day. You also need to fund the account with $250 — a figure Questrade states in its Questrade Reserve FAQ rather than on the Refer a Friend page itself, which is why sources disagree about whether a minimum exists.
One rule decides whether this is the right code for you: a referral code cannot be combined with any other Questrade offer code, and every new customer can use only one. You get the referral or the promotion, never both. Eligibility is limited to people genuinely new to Questrade — an existing account, or even an existing application, disqualifies you.
The code has to go in before an account number is issued, and the account must be both opened and funded within 60 days of starting the application — an application left half-finished past day 60 pays nobody. You also have to be genuinely new to Questrade: an existing account, or even an existing application, disqualifies you.
How do I use Questrade referral code 896023510497901?
What is Questrade's Refer a Friend program?
Refer a Friend is Questrade's own name for the programme this code belongs to — the one that pays $50 to each side. It is worth knowing the official name, because third-party sites call the same thing a referral programme, a promo, an invite scheme or a bonus offer, and Questrade's published terms are filed under Refer a Friend. If you want to check anything on this page against the source, that is the phrase to look for.
Confusingly, the code it issues is not called a Refer a Friend code anywhere in the application — the field you type it into is labelled Offer code.
The full sequence
- Begin a new Questrade account application. You must be new to Questrade — no existing account and no existing application.
- On the web, work through to the account-type screen and click the green Enter code button at the bottom. A pop-up appears; paste
896023510497901and hit apply. - In the Questrade app, the same thing is labelled Offer code on the screen after you pick your account type. Paste the code and select Confirm.
- Finish opening the account and fund it within 60 days. Both halves matter — the terms say opened and funded.
- The $50 is paid the following month, into your account. If you hold several accounts it goes to your billing account.
How much does the Questrade referral pay?
| Who / what | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| New client | $50 CAD | Open and fund a new self-directed or Questwealth account within 60 days, with the code applied at application |
| Referrer | $50 CAD | Paid once the new client meets the condition above |
| Payout timing | The following month | Not an instant credit — Questrade pays in the month after the account is completed |
| Referrals per year | 30 | Caps a referrer at roughly $1,500 CAD a year |
| Codes per new client | One | Referral codes cannot be combined with other offer codes |
The split is even, which is worth noting — many Canadian bank and brokerage referrals pay the referrer several times what the new customer gets. Here both sides receive the same $50.
The 30-per-year ceiling is the real constraint, and it applies to the referrer, not to you. As someone signing up, it costs you nothing; it just means no one is running an unlimited Questrade referral business. The payout timeline, the reasons a reward fails to appear, and what the cap works out to are covered on the Questrade referral bonus page.
Is a Questrade offer code the same as a referral code?
Search for a Questrade code and you'll be offered several different-sounding things — an offer code, a promo code, a referral code, a coupon. In the application, all of them go in the same single field. Questrade's mobile app labels it Offer code; the web application hides it behind a green Enter code button on the account-type screen. There is no second box for referrals.
Which leads to the rule that decides your choice. Questrade's published Refer a Friend guidelines state plainly that referral codes cannot be combined with other offer codes, and that every new customer can only use one referral code.
If you enter a promotional offer code — a free-trades promotion, a managed-money promotion, an interest-waiver code — you have spent your one box, and the $50 referral is gone. If you enter a referral code, the advertised promotion is gone. Pages listing a promo code and a referral code side by side, as if you can apply both, are describing something the terms do not allow.
| What you enter | What you get | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| A referral code | $50 to you, $50 to the referrer, low conditions | Whatever promotion was running |
| A promotional offer code | Whatever that promotion offers — usually tied to a much larger deposit or transfer | The $50 referral |
| Nothing | A normal Questrade account | Both |
The honest way to decide: the referral is the small, near-unconditional one — open an account you were going to open anyway, fund it, collect $50. Promotional codes generally pay more but ask for materially more money, often a transfer of existing assets, with their own qualifying windows. If the promotion's threshold is out of reach, it is worth nothing and the referral is strictly better. Read the terms attached to whichever code you enter, because they are not the same terms.
There is more on this — where the field appears on the web application versus the app, what each kind of code actually means, and how to judge whether a promotion beats the $50 — on the Questrade offer code and promo code page.
Can I add a Questrade referral code after starting my application?
Most referral programs are absolute about this: miss the box at signup and the reward is gone permanently. Questrade is unusually forgiving, and it is the single most useful thing on this page for anyone who has already begun an application.
Questrade's own guidance is that if an account number has not yet been created, you can contact them by phone or chat and they can add the referral code for you. Once an account number has been issued and appears on your application, the code can no longer be added — by you or by support.
If you're mid-application and realise you skipped the code, stop and contact Questrade now rather than finishing the application first. The account number is the point of no return.
Reward hasn't appeared?
Questrade lists four usual causes: the account wasn't completed within 60 days; the person already had a Questrade account or application; the referral code wasn't entered correctly at the start of the application; or the eligibility requirements haven't all been met yet. Note the timing before assuming something broke — payment comes the month after the account is finished, not within days of it.
Who is eligible for the Questrade referral bonus?
- New Questrade clients only. To count as new you must have no existing Questrade account and no existing application.
- Self-directed investing or Questwealth Portfolios accounts. The offer is currently available for Questrade and Questwealth accounts.
- One code, one client. Every new customer can use exactly one referral code, and it can't be combined with other offer codes.
- Opened and funded within 60 days of starting the application.
- The referrer needs an active Questrade account and can refer up to 30 new clients per year.
Which account types can I use the code with?
Questrade's terms name the account family — self-directed investing or Questwealth Portfolios — rather than individual registered types. But there is a practical limit worth knowing before you start, documented on Questrade's own page and almost nowhere else:
Questrade states that the only account types available in the Questrade mobile app are a TFSA, an RRSP and a Margin account. If you want the referral applied to an FHSA, an RESP or another registered account, apply through the web application instead — the code box is there too, behind the green “Enter code” button.
Do I need to deposit $250?
Yes — and the reason this question is so muddled is that Questrade answers it on two different pages that do not say the same thing.
The Refer a Friend page, which is where anyone would look, lists the eligibility guidelines and names no dollar amount — only that the account be opened and funded within 60 days. But the Questrade Reserve FAQ states it plainly: “to get the referral bonus, your friend must open the account using your referral code and fund the account with $250.”
So plan on $250. Sites that quote it are right about the number even when they cite nothing; sites that say no minimum exists are reading only the Refer a Friend page. Treat the funding minimum shown inside your own application as final.
Is the referral the same as Questrade's advertised promotion?
If you have seen much larger Questrade figures — free-trade credits, managed-money offers, margin-interest waivers, headline numbers in the hundreds — those are separate promotions with their own qualifying deposits and windows. They are not the Refer a Friend reward, and as above, they do not stack with it.
If you are weighing Questrade against the other large Canadian referral programme, the $50 is set side by side with Wealthsimple's $25 — conditions, payout speed, holds and caps — on Questrade vs Wealthsimple.
Is Questrade legitimate?
Yes. Questrade, Inc. is a registered investment dealer, a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF). There is no minimum balance to open an account.
One distinction is worth knowing before you pick an account type, because Questrade states it in its own disclosures and almost no comparison page repeats it: Questrade Wealth Management Inc. (QWM) — the entity behind Questwealth Portfolios — is not itself a member of CIRO or CIPF. Questrade, Inc. provides the custodial, trade-execution and reporting services, and CIPF protection is limited to the activities Questrade, Inc. undertakes.
Questrade advertises no minimum balance to open or hold an account, which is true and often quoted as proof that the referral needs no deposit. It isn't the same claim. The account minimum is zero; the referral requires the account be funded with $250 within 60 days. You can open a Questrade account with nothing in it — you just won't be paid the $50 for doing so.
Both referral-eligible account families are covered by that structure: self-directed investing accounts sit with Questrade, Inc., while Questwealth Portfolios is managed by QWM with Questrade, Inc. holding the assets. Nothing here is a recommendation to invest — it is context for deciding where to open an account you were already considering.
Why do other sites quote different Questrade figures?
Because a number of them are wrong — and because Questrade itself documents the programme across two pages that do not say the same thing. Three claims below are contradicted by Questrade's own Refer a Friend page. The most common — that the reward is $50 in free trades — appears in the page titles of several sites ranking for this term. Questrade's terms say you and your friend “receive $50 in your Questrade account”. It is cash, not trading credit, and the phrase “free trades” does not appear in the referral terms at all.
| Commonly published claim | What Questrade's terms actually say |
|---|---|
| “$50 in free trades” | $50 cash, paid into your Questrade account. “Free trades” and “commission-free” appear nowhere in the referral terms. |
| “Not valid for Questwealth” | The opposite. The offer is “available for Questrade and Questwealth accounts only” — Questwealth Portfolios is explicitly included. |
| “$25 a friend, bonus every third referral” | No tiering exists. It is a flat $50 to each side, up to 30 referrals a year. |
| “You must deposit $250” | Correct, but rarely sourced. The figure is absent from the Refer a Friend eligibility list and appears instead in Questrade's Reserve FAQ: fund the account with $250. Both must be met — $250 and within 60 days. |
None of this is a judgement about those sites — referral terms change and pages go stale. It is why this page states the date it was checked and links the source, so you can confirm any figure here against Questrade directly rather than taking it on trust.

Who maintains this
Every figure on this page was checked against Questrade's published Refer a Friend page and its eligibility guidelines on , and re-confirmed unchanged on that date. The $50 reward, the 60-day open-and-fund window, the 30-referrals-per-year cap, the following-month payout, the one-code rule and the account-number cut-off all come from that source, not from another comparison site.
Where Questrade's terms are silent — most notably on any minimum deposit amount — this page says so instead of supplying a number. Referral programs change without notice. If something here no longer matches what Questrade shows you, it's out of date and worth flagging.
