What is a Questrade offer code or promo code?
A Questrade offer code is whatever you type into the single code box in a new account application — for example the referral code 896023510497901 shared on this site. Questrade's mobile app labels that box Offer code; the web application hides it behind a green Enter code button on the account-type screen. Referral codes and promotional codes both go in the same place — there is no separate referral field.
Because there is only one box, the codes are mutually exclusive. Questrade's published eligibility guidelines state that referral codes cannot be combined with other offer codes, and that every new customer can only use one referral code. You are choosing between the $50 referral and whatever promotion is running — never collecting both.
A referral code pays $50 to you and $50 to the person who referred you, provided you open and fund the account within 60 days. A promotional code replaces that with the campaign's own offer, which usually requires a far larger deposit or a transfer of assets from another brokerage.
Pages that list a Questrade promo code and a referral code side by side imply you can apply both. You cannot. Every new customer can use exactly one code, and applying a promotional offer code forfeits the $50 referral reward entirely.
Where is the offer code field in the Questrade application?
This is the step people miss, because the field is not on the first screen and is not always called the same thing.
| Where | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Web application | Work through to the screen where you choose an account type. At the bottom is a green Enter code button. Clicking it opens a pop-up — paste the code there and apply, then agree to the offer's terms. |
| Questrade app | Tap Get Started, choose No, open an account (you must be a first-time user), pick an account type, read the qualification screen, then use the Offer code field and select Confirm. |
| A referral link | A personal referral link carries the code in the URL, so the field is filled in for you. Worth checking it actually shows before you continue. |
In all three cases the account then has to be opened and funded within 60 days of when you started the application.
Questrade states that the only account types available in the Questrade mobile app are a TFSA, an RRSP and a Margin account. If the account you want is an FHSA, an RESP or another registered type, apply on the web application — the code box is there too, behind the green “Enter code” button. Starting in the app and discovering the account type is missing is a common way to end up restarting an application.
Offer code vs promo code vs referral code: what's the difference?
The words get used interchangeably, which is most of the confusion. Sorting them out:
| Term | What it actually means |
|---|---|
| Offer code | Questrade's own label for the field. Not a type of code — the box that all codes go into. |
| Referral code | A personal code belonging to an existing Questrade client. Pays $50 to the new client and $50 to that client. This is the one on this site. |
| Promo code | A public marketing code for a campaign Questrade is running. Terms vary per campaign and usually attach to a much larger deposit or transfer. |
| Coupon / invite / RAF code | Informal names third-party sites use. Not Questrade terminology. |
So "is the Questrade offer code the same as the referral code?" has a two-part answer: same field, different code. They are entered in the same place, and they are mutually exclusive.
Which is worth more, a referral code or a promo code?
Because the box holds one code, this is a real decision rather than a formality. The honest way to make it:
- The referral is small and near-unconditional. $50, for opening and funding an account you were going to open anyway, inside 60 days. No transfer of existing assets, no headline deposit threshold in the published terms — the full payout timeline and the 30-a-year cap are set out separately.
- Promotions pay more and ask for more. Campaign offers — free-trade credits, managed-money offers, margin-interest waivers — are generally scaled to a large deposit or an account transfer from another brokerage, with their own qualifying windows.
- An offer you can't qualify for is worth zero. If a promotion needs $25,000 transferred in and you are opening a TFSA with $1,000, the referral is strictly the better code.
- Read the terms attached to the code you enter. The application asks you to agree to them at the moment you apply the code. They are not the same terms as the referral's.
What you would actually be giving up
Vague advice is easy to ignore, so here is what Questrade was actually running when this page was last checked, taken from its own promotions page on :
| Questrade offer | What it gives | Competes with the referral? |
|---|---|---|
0MARGIN | 0% margin interest on your first $5,000 USD for six months | Yes — it is an offer code, so it takes the one box |
| Transfer rebate | Reimburses transfer fees charged by your current institution, up to $150 per account | No — claimed after transferring, not via the code box |
| Questrade Plus trial | Free until 30 September 2026 — cashback, a 1% RRSP match and more | No — a subscription, not an offer code |
That distinction is the useful part. Only something entered as an offer code
competes with the referral. The transfer rebate and the Plus trial are claimed separately, so you can take the
$50 referral and a transfer rebate — you simply cannot take the $50 and 0MARGIN.
Which makes the real question narrow: is 0% margin interest on $5,000 for six months worth more to you than $50? If you do not intend to borrow on margin, it is worth nothing and the referral wins outright. Promotions change, so confirm what is running before you decide.
Third-party pages advertising Questrade codes frequently headline a figure from a promotion that has expired, or one drawn from a different program entirely. Before giving up a guaranteed $50, confirm the promotion is live and that you meet its threshold on Questrade's own promotions page.
Can I add an offer code after starting my application?
Questrade is unusually forgiving here. If no account number has been created yet, contact Questrade by phone or chat and they can add a referral code to your application. Once an account number has been issued and shows on the application, the code can no longer be added by anyone.
Full detail, plus the claim steps and payout timing, is on the Questrade referral code page. If you are also weighing another Canadian brokerage, the $50 is compared with Wealthsimple's $25 on Questrade vs Wealthsimple.

Who maintains this
Every figure on this page was checked against Questrade's published Refer a Friend page and its eligibility guidelines on . The $50 reward, the 60-day open-and-fund window, the 30-referrals-per-year cap, the following-month payout and the one-code rule all come from that source, not from another comparison site.
Referral programs change without notice. If something here no longer matches what Questrade shows you, it is out of date and worth flagging.
